BOARD MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, August 2, 2004
President Tracy Liberatore called the GHMC Historical Society August meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Grandview Public Library.
Secretary's report: The June 2004 minutes were presented and approved.
Treasurer's report: The report was approved as presented.
Committee reports:
Schools and Technology: No school report. Betty Salzgaber photos have been scanned. Wayne has prepared a sample booklet of all "Moment in Time" articles from Grandview ThisWeek. It was suggested and approved that we prepare pamphlets for distribution at the annual meeting.
City of Grandview: No report.
Village of Marble Cliff: The parking lot at Our Lady of Victory has been demolished and will be replaced within several weeks, in time for the August Festival. Building construction will begin shortly.
Membership: 3 new memberships reported.
Newsletter: The annual report will include "thank you's". Board members are urged to email to Pat names of any individuals or groups who should be recognized for their contributions the past year.
Breeze way: The display articles have been switched around, removing the Home Tour emphasis. Mary will add a notice on the annual meeting once the program is settled.
Projects:
Annual meeting: Mary has had no response from the women who wrote the book
on making historical wear. If she hears nothing further she is to contact the
German Village couple who are consultants on renovation of historical buildings
to see whether they would be available to present a program. It was further
suggested that we consider preparing "stations" to be manned by individual
board members to discuss materials uncovered in the past year. Perhaps one "station" on
homes, one on photographs obtained, one on businesses, etc. This could be an
addendum after the program is presented so society members could wander through
and see and discuss some of our recent discoveries and acquisitions.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
BOARD MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, June 1, 2004
Board President Liberatore called the GHMC Historical Society meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Secretary's report: The May 2004 minutes were presented and approved.
Karen Riggs reported on sponsorships for the 2004 Home Tour.
Treasurer's report: The report was approved as presented.
Committee reports:
Schools and Technology: No report.
City of Grandview: No report.
Village of Marble Cliff: The convent and school buildings at Our Lady of Victory have been razed.
Membership: No report.
Newsletter: There will be an August issue which will include an annual report on activities of the society as well as a report on the recent Home Tour and a preview of the annual meeting program scheduled for September. Tom will prepare a "book report" on the Julius Stone book he recently purchased on his tour of the Colorado River/Grand Canyon. Pat will need the articles in July.
Breeze way: Mary will remove the promotional materials for the Home Tour and either leave what was there previously or possibly display the brochures in full from the tour.
Projects:
Memorial Day Parade - only 3 members appeared and it was decided not to walk in the parade this year.
Home Tour:
The treasurer's report reflected that this was financially the most successful
tour to date. For future reference it should be noted that 600 brochures were
printed. House captains have sent notes of thanks to their volunteers and a
nice letter of thanks has been published in the TriVillage News and Grandview
ThisWeek.
New Business:
Annual meeting: The date of Sunday September 12, 2004 was selected subject to availability of the room. Mary will inquire into the availability of the women who have published a booklet on creating historical clothing. They offer a program demonstrating clothes and how to make them. The program can include activities for youth.
Tom reported that one of his docents, Ellen Staab, suggested a project as a fund raiser. She indicated she would be willing to pay to have research done on her home which would result in a writeup similar to what is included in the home tour brochure. The board discussed the possibilities and agreed that this may well be a worthwhile project to pursue. It will require further discussion to develop guidelines on what could be offered and what prices could be charged. Tentative suggestions included limiting research hours to 5 hours per home, with a caveat that end results could not be guaranteed. Perhaps tentative research could be done with an outline offered on what might be available on a home before the homeowner committed to subscribe. This will require further study.
Maureen Damiani reported that she and her husband will be moving in August or September. Therefore she will need to resign from the Board and since there is no July meeting this probably will be her last meeting. The Board offered its thanks for her contributions to the society in the past year. Several potential replacements were discussed.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
BOARD MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, May 4, 2004
President Tracy Liberatore called the GHMC Historical Society meeting to
order at 7:05 p.m.
Secretary's report: The April 2004 minutes were presented and approved as corrected.
Treasurer's report: The report was approved.
Committee reports:
Schools and Technology: No report.
City of Grandview: No report.
Village of Marble Cliff: No report.
Membership: reported that several late renewals have been received.
Newsletter: No report. Pat suggested that we skip the May issue due to time constraints brought on by the home tour. It was agreed that the next issue will be printed in early August.
Breezeway: Mary reported that promotional material for the Home Tour was in place in the breezeway, and additional items have been placed throughout the business community.
Projects:
Home Tour:
Pat reported new pricing for the brochures since the earlier pricing was predicated on fewer pages. A report was received of an error in dates on one of the homes. The brochures have now been printed so if any errors are reported we will offer corrections in the next newsletter. Each home captain was given the name and number of the florist who is providing arrangements for the inside and told to call and arrange whether they will be delivered or should be picked up. The printer is making 10 yard signs which will be laminated to be placed at curbside identifying the location of the home tour houses. Tom will arrange for distribution of the money boxes for each home. These will be delivered to each home on Sunday prior to the onset of the tour. Ruthanne's packets will include a sheet for denoting book sales by book. Pat will deliver packages of 10 copies of each of our four publications to each of the 5 homes. Terry will print additional copies of the membership application so each home will have 10. Terry will print docent names tags without individuals names. These should be filled in manually by the house captain the day of the tour. Wayne and Terry volunteered to handle laying of the carpets at the Broadview and Woodhill homes Saturday morning. Captains are reminded to arrange for a card table and chairs for use outside by the ticket sellers/takers. Discussion was held on the number of docents available at each home. Terry volunteered to round up more docents as needed. The contract for the golf carts was reviewed and it was pointed out there is a requirement that drivers be at least 18 years of age and have valid drivers licenses. Terry will report this to the Scout Troop. If the scouts still are available they can be used as volunteers. The golf carts are to be delivered to the municipal building either Friday or Saturday. Maureen will contact them and try to get this put off until Saturday. They will be picked up Monday.
New Business:
Tom reported that Our Lady of Victory is having a silent auction for the remains of the convent prior to demotion.
BOARD MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, April 6, 2004
President Tracy Liberatore called the GHMC Historical Society April meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Also attending: Home tour sponsor chair presented an interim report and had several questions, which the Board considered.
Secretary's report: The March 2004 minutes were presented and approved ascorrected.
Treasurer's report: The report was approved.
Committee reports:
Schools and Technology: No report.
City of Grandview: No report other than that the new city administrator reported that they have decided to retain the boxes of records the society had expressed interest in. It was agreed that our sole concern had been that if these records were to be destroyed we wanted to preserve them, but if the city is going to retain them we are no longer concerned.
Village of Marble Cliff: No report.
Membership: No report other than that Terry is contacting those whose membership expired.
Newsletter: No report.
Breezeway: Mary will prepare new signs promoting the home tour and she and Pat will put them on display next week.
Old Business:
Memorial Day Parade - It was agreed that board members will participate in the parade.
Home Tour:
The 5th house article will be published in GrandviewThisWeek April 29 and
the wrap up article the first Thursday in May. Cost of the brochure will be substantially
less than 3 years ago. It was agreed that we should order a printing of 600.
Discussion on docents - each board member will contact friends to identify volunteers. Tracy will contact Win Keller and Joanne Curry about assistance. Each house captain provided color suggestions so Pat can relay that for appropriate floral displays. Discussion on floor coverings/runners indicates that the primary concern will be if the weather is bad. It was recommended that each House Captin schedule a brief (30 minute) gathering of their docents at their home the day before the tour to meet each other and be given directions on procedures.
New Business:
A publishing company contacted Pat about the possibility of printing a book on Grandview/Marble Cliff. It appears they may not be interested due to their requirement for a minimum of 7,000 unit sales. However, it was agreed to review this possibility in the next meeting before rendering a final decision.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
BOARD MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, March 2, 2004
President Tracy Liberatore called the GHMC Historical Society March meeting
to order at 7:00 p.m.
Also attending: Don Bell, City of Grandview Heights. Don was here in response to our request for information on a possible celebration for the City of Grandview Heights' Centennial in 2006. He has asked his staff to brainstorm what his group can do to help celebrate the centennial. Pierce Field renovation may be the centerpiece, depending on fund raising success, including possible grants such as ODNR. There may be a celebration event at Pierce, similar to 90th on the 9th at Wyman Woods, or perhaps an expansion of the timeline or a project like that. The City cannot tell yet what the funding will look like for a celebration event. Pat recommended estasblishment of a Commission to plan a comprehensive celebration. Don responded that as the new administration gets established they may be able to address this. Tom suggested that as we have expressed to Dan Headapohl such a committee could use the Marble Cliff centennial celebration planning as a model. Pat commented it is the feeling of the Society that it would not be appropriate for the Historical Society to take the lead in such a celebration. Don committed to discussing our thoughts with Dan Headapohl.
Secretary's report: The February 2004 minutes were presented and approved.
Treasurer's report: The report was approved.
Committee reports:
Schools and Technology: No report.

Membership: Terry distributed current membership lists to those interested;
as of February 28 there are 50 annual memberships paid (with a total of 71
people); 39 Life
Memberships paid (total of 54 people); and we mail 40 free issues to various
households in an attempt to get them to rejoin.
Newsletter: Brief discussion was held on the draft of the next newsletter, which will mail by the end of this week.
Home Tour:
Pat is negotiating prices for the home tour brochure with several printers
including the company that does our newsletter. Mary will make two posters from
the next newsletter insert for posting in the breezeway. Grandview ThisWeek will
begin a series of articles on the home tour, starting with this week. It was
agreed we should work on obtaining sponsorships for the home tour brochure.
The consensus was
to ask companies directly involved in home repairs, furnishings, sales, etc.
New Business:
Pat read from a written request he received from a German television station that plans to prepare a history on the Bush family for broadcast in Germany and France and would like our assistance on material from their stay in Marble Cliff. It was agreed that we should provide what we can with the request that our assistance be acknowledged.
Tracy reported that Alan Froman's request for a weekly item to include a photograph with a brief description could begin immediately or could wait until after the Home Tour promotion. It was agreed we should start as soon as possible.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Pat will write an article on development of Grandview east of Grandview avenue to tie in with the home tour.
New Business:
GHMCHS received an additional purchase order from the Allen County Library of Fort Wayne Indiana for purchase of the 4 publications.
The question of Corporate sponsors has been delayed from meeting to meeting for several months. Discussion led to a concensus that it might be a good idea to approach businesses with the idea of becoming sponsors for the home tour. This could include local newspapers, Giant Eagle, local banks, local realtors and businesses that work in the area of remodeling of homes, etc. Each member is to try to come up with one or two names for the next meeting. At that time we will discuss levels of sponsorship and assign to individual board members which business they should try to contact. Individual membership concepts also were discussed and will be investigated further.
A discussion was held on the proposed demolition requests from Our Lady of Victory, namely the school and the original Casparis house which was used as a convent and now serves as the parish office. After detailed discussion it was agreed that Tom will prepare a letter which will be sent not only to the Marble Cliff Village office but also to the OLV parish as well as appropriate individuals connnected with the diocese requesting they give further consideration to the possibility of preserving the Casparis house. The GHMS Historical Society will provide background on the historical significance of this building for their consideration.

been appointed as Grandview Council liaison with the Historical Society. It
was voted by the Board that the Secretary add Mr. Headapohl to our group email
so he will receive copies of Society Minutes and other notices. The upcoming
Centennial of Grandview in 2006 also was discussed briefly and
